Most YouTubers Focus on the Wrong Metric.
I learned it the hard way after I started in 2012:

These are screenshots I just took of one of my new channels.
Most creators never look at this page until they hit 1,000 subs…
Only to be disappointed that they still need 2X their current watch hours.
If you’re reading this post.
I hope I can save you some time.
How?
By making you aware of the “bigger” problem (for most):
“Watch hours”.
This obviously raises the question…
“How do I increase my watch hours”
You want me to be honest?
You want me to give you the secret?
Really?
Just
Make
Longer
Videos.
“But it takes more time, Jordan”
“But then I can’t upload daily, Jordan”
“But it costs me more money on my video editor, Jordan”
You’re right.
But here’s what YouTube cares about the MOST:
The ABSOLUTE amount of time someone watches your video.
NOT the Average Percentage Viewed (AVP %).
Let me explain…👇
Average Percentage Viewed (AVP %) vs Average View Duration (AVD mm:ss)
❤️🩹 Video 1: 35% AVP | 2:30 AVD
🏆 Video 2: 20% AVP | 12:00 AVD
The lesson?
Don’t fall in love with AVP % as much as you do with AVD mm:ss
That being said…
Are there other things that have a big or small impact too?
Absolutely.
