Most editors waste 80% of their time.

I hear YouTube advice all the time.
Probably just like you.
I’ve heard it many times.
The hook. The intro. BLA BLA.β
You see?
I told my editor to stop editing MORE videos.
Instead, to edit BETTER videos.
To put more time, effort & sweat into each individual piece.
So he did.
Not because I’m a tyrant.
But because he loves the idea too.
BUT…I forgot something.
Something SO important (with hindsight).
A crucial piece was missing in my conversation with him.
A vital element in our videos editing workflow was lacking.
Order.
The
Right
Order.
Let me explain…

As you can see in my image there are 3 numbers:
1st “XX% stil watching after 0:30 seconds”
2nd “Average percentage viewed” (How many people watched till the end)
3rd “Views”
If 1 goes up, 2 goes up and 3 goes up.
In THAT order.
The same way video editing has a flow, a rhythm.
After seeing that graph,
I analyzed 6 other outlier videos of mine.
Something clicked for me…
The right video editor uses his time:
NOT linearly,
BUT exponentially.
Like this graph I just drew π

For example, you or your editor spends 20 hours editing a 10 minute video.
π΄ Linear:
2h on the 1st minute
2h on the 2nd minute
…
2h on the last minute.
π’ Exponentially:
16 hours on the first minute
2 hours on the 2nd minute
2 hours on 2:00-10:00 (the last 8 minutes of the video).
I know…
I make it EXTREME.
But my point is this:
The editor who spends a high % of his time,
On the parts of the video where most have already left,
Is basically cleaning the back of a fridge.
Use most of your time cleaning the front, my friend.
So that maybe a few…
Will want to see the back too.

PS: Submagic decided to sponsor me.
But their deal is running out soon.
They help my small team a lot with the editing.
It allows us to post 100 times per week in less than 5 hours (including the editing).

But I hate paying for tools.
