This ONE shift changed how I edit, script, and publish videos.
And no, it’s NOT about storytelling…😂
I got this algorithm question…👇
“How important is AVD compared to CTR in your experience? Do you feel like one carries more weight when it comes to impressions?”
Because you might be wasting time, energy, and $$$ on editing…
Trying to boost Average View Duration (AVD).
Thinking it’s your biggest growth lever.
But what if it’s not?

My old assumption:
AVD matters most → more ads → more revenue for YouTube.
But think about it…
Would YT rather push videos with high CTR (clickbait)?
Or high AVD (retention)?
Truth is: click happens 1st, so CTR still matters a lot.
My experience?
↳ CTR has been way easier to increase than AVD.
(Thanks to systems I won’t go into here.)
BUT…
It’s MUCH easier to hit 45–50% AVP on 4–5 min videos.
But exponentially harder on longer ones.
Why?
Because 70–85% of views come from new viewers.
They don’t know, like, or trust you yet.
Returning viewers?
They watch longer and click more.
This changes how I record, edit, and what I prioritize.
